Our History

Manchester and Cheshire Construction was founded in 1971 by Mr Charles Lowe and Mr John Purcell.

Both partners used their trade background and their vast experience in the construction industry to earn the company a reputation as a quality, reliable firm. Through the successful completion of small general building projects, such as private extensions, the partners were able to win projects with larger organisations.

It was for one of these companies, ICI Chemicals, that Manchester and Cheshire Construction carried out its first concrete repair project. The repair techniques used were state of the art, and the company soon became the leading concrete repair specialist in the region. This led to accelerated growth throughout the 1970’s and 80’s and took the company into many of the sectors in which we still operate today, such as education and housing.

Both partners were joiners by trade and disagreed with the approach of most of the major contractors at that time, who laid off most of their site-based workforce at the end of a project, or just before xmas, so that they did not have to pay holiday pay. When they set up Manchester and Cheshire Construction the partners were determined to do things differently and recruited a direct labour force which they kept on through both good and lean times.

In the early 1990's a civil engineering division was added. This helped to continue the company’s growth and also increased the expertise of the building arm of the company.

Our approach has won us a blue-chip client base across a wide range of sectors, including the Royal Mail, the Health and Safety Executive, Peel Holdings, Manchester Airport, the University of Manchester, Bruntwood Properties and many of the local authorities and housing associations in the area.

Today the company is still family-owned and still abides by the traditional construction ideals which led to its original growth.
