The restoration of Stanley Dock Bridge has won an award at the prestigious ‘Historic
Bridge and Infrastructure Awards’ in London. The awards are
organised by the Institute of Civil Engineers and were held
at their headquarters in Westminster. Certificates were presented
by Peter Hansford, President of the ICE, at a ceremony on
Thursday 31st March.
The £600,000 project was carried out by Salford-based contractor, Manchester and Cheshire Construction and involved repairs and restoration to the 78-year-old Bascule Bridge in Liverpool Docks. The bridge is the only surviving example of a rolling Bascule lifting bridge in Liverpool and is an integral feature of the Stanley Dock Conservation Area and the World Heritage designation. It was closed after it was eaten away by corrosion but rather than fit a new crossing, its owner Peel Holdings and Liverpool City Council decided to refurbish it.
The project was ideally suited to the Manchester and Cheshire Construction as Business Development Manager Chris Purcell explains;
"We have a wealth of experience in both civil engineering and conservation and it's rare that the two combine as they did in this case. The project was technically very difficult and the Site Supervisor, Tim Pugh, performed excellently. It’s great to receive an accolade for our work but to receive a prestigious award in such esteemed surroundings is a tremendous honour for the company."
The company are hopeful for further success as Purcell explains;
"The project has also been shortlisted for a Heritage Award at the North West Regional Construction Awards which are to be held at the end of May so we're now focused on winning the double!"
The award was recently the subject of an article in the Manchester Evening News.
