Manchester and Cheshire Construction Nets University Hat-Trick

September 28th 2009

Manchester and Cheshire Construction Co. Ltd. has been included on a £20million construction framework with the University of Salford.

This completes a hat-trick of successes within the higher education sector as the company are already on similar frameworks with the University of Manchester and the University of Bolton. They were also recently included on a £235million framework with City West Housing Trust.

The award follows a rigorous selection procedure and the company’s direct employment policy, coupled with relevant experience was a key factor, as the company's Business Development Manager, Chris Purcell, explains,

'An increasing number of our clients, particularly in the education and social housing sectors, are
asking us to demonstrate a commitment to a directly employed labour force. They are not looking
for contractors who will just employ a management team and subcontract all the actual work, but contractors who have the knowledge and resources to carry out a proportion of the works themselves.
We have had a direct labour force for 38 years and as an Investor in People we have a proven track record in training and developing our employees. Indeed, we have taken on students from the
University of Salford itself in each of the past two years.'

Inclusion on the framework also helps to protect the company during the current recession,

'There is an increasing number of contractors bidding for a decreasing amount of work. Tender prices have been squeezed accordingly and many clients focus on the cheapest price, wherever it comes from. With frameworks such as this, we know that we are bidding against contractors with a similar commitment to direct employment and training, and are therefore competing on a level playing field.'
