Extension and Refurbishment of Elworth Church of England School to provide 105 additional school places
Contract Sum: £1.6m
Contract Duration: 1 year
Client: Cheshire East Council
Architect: Halliday Meecham
Key Challenges: Challenges of undertaking works in an operational school environment were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic; maintaining a safe environment for children, staff and visitors; ensuring the target cost was met.
We were invited by Cheshire East Council to conduct an extension and refurbishment of Elworth CE Primary School to assist with increasing the provision from 315 to 420 school places, in an expanding residential area of Sandbach.
The project entailed building a four-classroom extension and carrying out a large internal refurbishment including toilets and offices, a new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), playground refurbishment and external entrance and playing field perimeter footpaths.
“It is never easy working in a “live” building environment particularly in education; Manchester & Cheshire worked extremely closely with the school to ensure the safety of pupils, staff and public throughout the whole project. Even during the difficult phase of the internal modifications the attention to detail to maintain the operational school meant that the education of the children was not disrupted. MC Construction have delivered an extension and adaptation project at Elworth CE Primary School, which the governors, staff and pupils are extremely proud of. The final design of the Phase 2 works has created high quality accommodation for year five and six pupils, along with excellent toilet, ancillary, resource rooms and external play facilities. The design took account of the existing school accommodation and has been delivered to create a free-flowing education environment from early years right through the way through to year six. When the children speak of the new building they do so with pride and appreciation and when children are saying these things we know that we have delivered something really special.”
